History of the Department

Department of Applied Mathematics was established in 1990 resulting from the development of new fields of study and the increase of enrolment which caused enlargement of didactics. It was then one of four departments emerged from the former Department of Mathematics located in the structure of Electrical Engineering Faculty. Finally, it exists in the frame of the Faculty of Technology Fundamentals. Since the formation of Mathematics on 1st Oct.’08 as one of our university fields of study, the department has been leading this field, presently at two levels (B.Eng., MSc.) Moreover, our academic teachers carry out didactics in mathematics at part of the whole University at varying demands. On 1st Oct.’20, another field of study, ie.: data analysis and engineering, was introduced at BEng. Level, practical mode, presently developed.

The first chair of the Dept. was professor Zdzisław Grodzki in yrs.: 1990-1993; 1994-2001, and then, the following academics: dr Jerzy Żurawiecki (2001), dr Janusz Szuster (1993-1994; 2016-2019), professor Józef Waniurski (2002-2012), dr hab. Waldemar Cieślak (2012 do 2016), presently, since 2016 dr Ewa Łazuka, university professor.

The continuous development of the department enabled creation of two units in its structure, ie.: Research unit of mathematical modeling (dir. Dr Izolda Gorgol) and Didactic unit of mathematical methods (dir. Dr Paweł Wlaź)

Didactics

Our teachers deliver didactics in mathematics, data analyses, financial mathematics and computer science.

In the meantime, the department carried out the post diploma study in mathematics and computer science elements which graduated several hundreds of school teachers.

Curriculum of regular courses contain application subjects such as financial and assurance mathematics, CAD in engineering, FEM, computer graphics, statistical data analysis, data analysis systems and data bases.

Since 2017/2018 yr, second level Mathematics has been carried as MSc course at practical profile with engineer’s competences. Graduates receive M.Eng. Diploma after 4-semester course for Bc. Course graduates (summer enrolment) and after 3-semester course for B.Eng. graduates (winter enrolment)

Since 2020/2021 yr the Department carries 7 semester engineering course at practical mode as another field of study, ie.: data analysis and engineering.
